LAND OF THE RISING

Magnificent and heavily fortified,
World Heritage site Himeji Castle at dusk

Preconceived ideas about Japan tend to fall into two categories: ultra-modern concrete jungle packed with salarymen; or mythical land of geisha, samurai and the occasional ninja. But today’s Japan encompasses many dramatic contrasts, and not just between the old and new.

The Japanese archipelago stretches nearly 3,000km from the snowy mountains of Hokkaido to the subtropical jungles of Okinawa. CHRIS WILLSON reports on ways to experience this distinctive and diverse destination, from the peak of Mount Fuji to the shallower views from a hot spring pool. And DANIELLE DEMETRIOU takes us on a whirlwind culinary tour of the country.

Our city guides will aid those visiting Japan’s business hubs. Add on a few days for leisure; for many, a brief encounter will be the start of a long-lasting love affair with the land of the rising sun.
